Single Story Case Study

Building:

Single Story Office and Flex Space

Square Footage:

3,000 SF

Location:

Rochester, NY

Background:

Single Story Flex Space unit with offices meetings rooms in the middle and warehouse. Programmable thermostats controlling roof top equipment with single stage heating and cooling.

Issues:
  • Single Story Flex Space unit with offices meetings rooms in the middle and warehouse.
  • Programmable thermostats controlling roof top equipment with single stage heating and cooling.

Cognition Install:

Hassle-free replacement of existing programmable thermostats with Cognition controls – under 20 minute total install time – and out of the box connectivity for remote control.
Results Summary:
  • +36% HVAC equipment energy savings compared to a 72 hold.
  • Peace of mind to change settings to achieve savings knowing Cognition automatically pre-heats/cools the space to occupied comfort settings.
  • Identified that 1 of the 2 packaged units works 15x more, requiring more frequent maintenance.
Energy Insights

From Oct 26/22 to Mar 20/23, your HVAC equipment runtime minutes totaled 47,091. When compared to a 72 degree hold – which data on your programmable thermostats indicates was how you were managing your space – this is a ~38% decrease in runtime. The majority of this decrease is from the Front Hallway equipment, which operates ~15x more than the Open Space.

Cognition Controls manages your space based on a comfort range (provided by you in the dashboard), and automatically slopes between unoccupied and occupied times to ensure comfort when you occupied. Managing your space with a range, rather than a hold, reduces HVAC equipment wear and tear and lowers energy consumption. In the graph below, the blue lines show how the temperature in your space is able to vary, and get as low as 60 during unoccupied times. In contrast, the orange lines show the much tighter 72 hold range, and how the equipment must continuously operate to maintain it. In the Cognition dashboard you are able to track how your space behaves. In the graph to the left, the orange bars indicate heating calls to the HVAC equipment (cooling are in blue). The green line is indoor temperature and the consistency of the temperature pattern indicates that the comfort settings for the space are dialed in, and that Cognition is consistently managing through the peaks and lows of the external temperature (grey line).
